From June 15-18, 2023, the picturesque region near Geneva hosted the Khamsin Cinquanta (K50), an unforgettable event celebrating the Maserati Khamsin. Despite taking place over a year ago, the event still deserves a place in Alfieri Magazine as an accolade for the dedication and enthusiasm of its organizer, Marc Sonnery. After three years of meticulous planning and a year-long COVID delay, the anticipation was real. The event unfolded at Le Domaine de Divonne, a serene location just across the French border with Switzerland.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND WELCOME
The atmosphere was electric as Khamsins arrived from 11 countries, including the USA and New Zealand. The day kicked off with a welcome cocktail and dinner, where the camaraderie and enthusiasm among the participants were immediately evident. Conversations flowed easily, reminiscent of the Khamsin Quaranta event in Burgundy in 2012.
DAY 2: TOUR DU JURA
Friday began with the much-anticipated Tour du Jura, a 200+ km scenic drive through the Swiss Jura mountains.
After a scenic drive, including climbing two passes, driving along Lake de Joux and through rock arches, the impressive motorcade arrived for lunch in Motiers, Neuchatel canton. Here, the main street was closed off, allowing the impressive lineup of Khamsins to be admired by locals and participants alike.
Lunch was a delightful affair, with visits to the Australian Aborigine Art Museum and Le Manege Automotive Museum adding a cultural touch. The drive continued through wolf country, offering breathtaking views over Lake Neuchatel before winding past the Chateau de Champvent and returningto the hotel. The evening culminated with a visit to the Chateau de Prangins, where participants enjoyed guided tours and a relaxing cocktail on the terrace.
DAY 3: CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE SUISSE
On Saturday, additional Khamsins joined the event, bringing the total to 26. A short but spectacular drive to La Mainaz for brunch offered panoramic views of Lake Geneva, the city, and the majestic Alps.
The day’s highlight was the Khamsin concours within the prestigious Concours d’Elegance Suisse. Lined up against the stunning backdrop of Lake Geneva, the Khamsins were a sight to behold. Judges Peter Straub and Fabio Collina meticulously evaluated the cars while drone footage captured the historic gathering. Surprisingly and amusingly, the number of vehicles was the same as during K40 in 2012, though only a few cars were the same.
The evening’s black-tie cocktail reception and gala awards dinner added a touch of elegance, concluding with dancing and celebrations.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
The awards ceremony recognized the dedication and spirit of the participants:
• Spirit of K50: Lucas Gysin
• Longest Distance Travelled: Paul and
Glenys Halford from New Zealand
• Best Restoration and Best of Show: Marek Evert from Berlin, Germany
• Judges Awards: Presented by Peter Straub and Fabio Collina
Other notable awards included Ladies Choice, People’s Choice, and special mentions for best help and heroism.
DAY 4: FAREWELL AND REFLECTIONS
The final day was a mix of fond farewells and reflections. Participants received a catalogue from Bonhams and access to the Bonmont auction, a fitting end to the event. The conversations were filled with praise for the organization and the unique bond shared among Khamsin enthusiasts.
LOOKING AHEAD
The event was an overwhelming success, prompting discussions about a possible Khamsin Cinquanta Cinque in 2028. Marc replied: “Not a promise, but a maybe.” The weekend was a testament to the enduring appeal of the Maserati Khamsin, and the community looks forward to the car’s next anniversary.
