Maserati's Classiche documentation is a must-have.

It's often so that classic Maseratis are offered for sale, even in auctions, without their Historical Documentation. So here is why you should apply for these papers.

As an owner or seller, it should be a natural reflex to have the paperwork with the car. It gives you a view into the cars' past and might reveal some unique features or facts of your precious Maserati. For example, there is the story of a guy who sold a resale red 1969 Mistral Coupé without the factory documentation. The new owner requested the documentation and found out the original colour combination was Luci di Mezzanotte (dark brown) with a Tan interior. He could then derive that the Mistral still had the original interior. More importantly, the car was made specifically for the Salone Di Chicago in '69. Che sorpresa!

Requesting the documents

It's a straightforward application that consists of two elements. The first and optional step is open to anyone. Any person can request basic preliminary information based on a chassis number; no photographic evidence is needed. This might be handy to know where a particular car was delivered originally and in what colour combination.

In the second step, the owner must order the complete set of documents. As proof, the factory requests pictures from different parts of the car, including close-ups of numbers and stampings. After that, they will start their research, and if all checks out with what they have on record, they will give you a textual overview of what is available from the Archive. On the other hand, if it doesn't check out, it could probably mean a previous owner installed a replacement engine or someone tampered with the numbers. As a result, the documents will not be provided, and a flag is set in the factory's database, all for the improvement of the heritage. In addition, every communication and email is stored, logged and matched to a car and chassis number with each request. This way, the community of car owners and enthusiasts are helping Maserati build their registry.

If you're applying for a historic race car, the procedure is somewhat different and requires more photography and preparation.

It's interesting mainly for its "historical feeling" --> 50 Euro (2 pages, 100€)
